re: FAQ's about Cloth Diapering

posted 5th May '10
So when I have a dirty diaper, do you guys spray it before you put it in the dirty bin? Or soak it?

Also- I'm confused if I get a water proof diaper, and put soakers inside of it, I can reuse the diaper, and keep changing out the soaker, right?

i spray the poop off personally, some girls leave it on there and take the poop off before washing. ebf poop is water soluble so they don't need to rinse it off.

and it really depends on the type of diaper that you get to reuse. sometimes all in 2s you can reuse like that, snap in liners, simple cloth/covers you can do that.... but pockets, all in ones, and such you'd have to wash it each time.

How would wash cycles differ with a front loading washer? I have no options on mine for programming cycles and the normal wash cycles take forever. I'd be washing diapers for hours and hours...

What about doing a hand pre-rinse to save time?

There are quite a few people that have front-loaders in the CDRB thread. The main difference I've seen is that they need to run a few more rinse cycles and use less detergent but otherwise it's pretty similar.

I'll send a few of them this way to answer your question though

I just noticed you live at Fort Lost in the Woods. My husband trained to be an MP there.

Ah, very cool! My husband did as well and strangely still wanted to come back   He's an odd duck though but this place does beat Leavenworth so I'm not complaining.

That was actually one of our PCS options   I was born in CT so I wasn't really feeling the cold again...that and he would've deployed within 2 weeks or something ridiculous of us getting there.

I wouldn't recommend Leavenworth unless your DH wants to be a cage kicker   MPs are WAY overbooked there and they're starting to switch to civi cops on post (don't ask me why) so all the Bravos got put on cage kicking duty and DH HATED it with a passion. Only good thing was having Kansas City so close, but even that lost its novelty after awhile. I'd take it back over living out here though, haha. There's a reason they call it Lost in the Woods, Misery

LOL. I literally got lost in the woods while driving 4 hours from Arkansas to visit my husband while he was in basic and AIT. The south side of post is no joke when you're not familiar to the area. It is a way better post than Drum though. The only upside to this place is that it's a very pretty area. The grass stays green from April until October. Sadly, that's the window for no snow up here. The town and people up here are eyesores.

This place is HUGE compared to Leavenworth so it was a bit of an adjustment. We live off post though so it's all like middle-of-nowhere, hickville USA.
It's not the worst place I've lived. I like it "down south" because people are usually friendly and after living in CT 8 years and Wisconsin for 4, I'm done with snow

The on-post housing here SUCKS though. Plus the wait list was ridiculous. And there's always trainees around so you have to make sure not to run them over or hit another car while watching them, haha. It sucks at the PX though because the lines are ridiculous and there are always people in the way.

Ha. When my husband deployed, I moved back down south for the year. Then we came back up here in March and I took a walk through the PX here and thought, "Did we just transport to Leonard Wood?!" Apparently they did some remodeling while we were gone. LOL. The PX isn't AS crappy any more.

Speaking of this awful area...
It's May. It's 34 degrees. There's a chance of snow and the wind is gusting to 25 mph. I LOVE Lake Ontario!

34 degrees?!? Oh you poor thing   I couldn't do it. In Leavenworth they had a blizzard in the middle of April last year and I always swore that if it ever snowed on my birthday (May 30th), I'd cry and demand we move. I did cry when we got orders here but that was pregnancy-related and I didn't want to leave my OB, haha.

I don't do trainees well. That sounds horrible but they clog everything up and they're usually full of stupid stuff. I'm so glad we don't live on post! My only complaint for right now is unpacking. I hate unpacking and with fat kid due so soon, I hate having everything half unpacked and the rest a mess...including his half-painted room

Trainees do suck. The majority are fresh out of high school and ready for the any second of freedom so they can go out and get wasted and fight over girls. Most of the fuzzies through PFCs here are like that. It's like that at pretty much any Army post you go though. :/

Ok, so this is my first baby. So, I hope I don't sound too stupid asking this but anyways....

How often do you need to change your cloth diaper? Can they pee in it, and you let it go until they pee again? Or if they peed heavily, you change the diaper? I know if they poop that would qualify for a new diaper. But how soiled should I let the diaper go?

Also- what if I changed the soaker pad, and there is a little bit of pee or something on the side of the diaper that the cloth caught. Is it ok to keep that diaper, and put a new soaker pad in?

You should ideally change a cloth baby every 1.5-2 hours. With cloth, the problem is that you might not know they're wet because the diaper is designed to wick moisture away from the baby's bottom, making them seem "dry." They DO need to be changed more frequently than disposable diapers.

And depending on the diapering system, most covers are lined with PUL so assuming it's not pooped on, you can wipe it out and reuse the cover with a new insert. A lot of women here "air out" one covers between changings. If it's a pocket diaper or an AIO/AI2, it's a one-time use thing, sorry!
