Im sorry im just doing some research on this to see if i want to switch to cloth. Does this mean you are washing your diaper in the washer up to 4 times before its clean and then up to 7 times when you strip it?
I have to go next door to my moms house to wash my laundry and dont think i could wash things that often. Also if you have poop diapers how do you not run out of diapers? This cloth diaper thing sounds intresting but its kinda confusing me at the same time.

Having a poop diaper shouldn't mess up the cycle. I still change his diaper just as often if it's a poop diaper or a pee diaper. If you have a full set of diapers (25-30), then you can wash every other day for a newborn and every 3-4 days (maybe even 5) for an older baby.

All these wash routines sound so complicated. I'm really lucky that in Austria we can use our regular detergent on our diapers and we have an extra long, extra hot setting (almost 3 hours) that we just run one cycle on and it gets them clean, they don't stink and we've never had to strip in the 12m+ that we've been diapering.

I'm in the states for a couple months, which is why I looked up this thread. Right now, I'm doing

pre-rinse (or wash) cold, no soap
extra long, hot wash with hot rinse, soap

I guess I could add another rinse after that, but so far that's what I've been doing.

This makes me even more impressed at the Austrian washing machines. lol

I am about to order some Cloth diapers and have a couple questions also....I cannot see doing that many loads of wash for one set of items..I mean I will do whatever I have to do to put clean diapers on my daughter, but my water bill is already 3x what it should be....Also, has anyone ever used sunbaby cloth diapers...I was recently told about them and I am about to order as many as possible...just want to make sure they are actually good....I would just order a couple and try them, but you get bigger discounts when you order more....I have two kids 1 is 2 and the other is 1 month old...Would 24 diapers with 48 inserts be enough? Any body recommend any other types of cloth diapers? THANK YOU

Sunbaby are ok diapers. some people love them. they weren't my favorite in particular. I would actually suggest Alvababy or even some other "chinese cheapies" on ebay. You can get them for as cheap as $4-5 shipped each. I wouldn't get a 24-set of just one diaper until you try them out and decide you like them.

25-30 diapers is generally enough for a "full set" meaning you can do laundry every other day with a 0-9 month old and every 2-4 days with an older baby.

As far as washing goes, not everybody washes 5 times. Since I've been in the states, I do a cold rinse (about 15min), then the longest hottest wash that the machine does (so if it includes a pre-rinse, extra rinse, extra long, whatever "extra" options are there, put them in that wash, mine takes 99min) and then end with another 15m rinse (or leave that off if you prefer).

My routine with an LG HE front loader:

1 cold rinse with 1/2 cup white vinegar
Then I hear my machine beep, come back and put in 2 scoops of Charlie's soap- one in the prewash side of my detergent cup, one in the wash side.
Next I set my machine to: high soil, prewash, extra water, hot.
And this is what happens:
1 prewash on hot w/ soap
1 long wash on hot w/ soap
1 cold rinse
1 more cold rinse

I don't have a hot rinse option and this works fine.

hello, i am new to CDing, i went to walmart today and seen that they started selling cloth diapers, the brand is Mabu Baby. So i went ahead and bought a starter kit and 2 packages of the cloth inserts(2 in each pack). the kit comes with 2 outer diapers, 2 cloth inserts, 2 disposable inserts and 5 disposable liners. I just started reading this thread and didnt realize how many wash cycles it takes to get them clean. I do not have a hot water hook up on my washer, so i hope that doesnt cause a problem. Could i do a cold wash with no soap, then cold wash with soap and then 2 rinse cycles? would it be easier if i use a soak pale to store the dirty ones before washing? my LO is 4 months old now, so how many outer diapers and cloth inserts would i need if i want to only wash every 2-3 days?

I make my own detergent... I use borax, washing soda and ivory. would this cause the insert to not absorb?

i have been doing a lot of research on homemade laundry soap...i found one that is safe for cloth diapers, it does not include any kind of bar soap because the bar soap can build up in the diaper and make it not absorb
this is the recipe i use for my cloth diapers....
equal parts of
baking soda
oxyclean(or cheap brand)
washing soda
For my regular laundry i use
1 cup Fels-Naptha Soap(u can use ivory instead)
1 cup Washing Soda
1/2 cup Borax
