I believe before the epideral they usually give everyone nubane. My aunt delivered all 4 of her kids with just nubane. For me it didn't work anymore than asprin I tried with my first 30 minutes later or something like that came the epideral!

You should have the options of Demerol, Stadol (sp?), or nubane. However, my dr. would not allow nubane (even though they had it in house) due to the number of people that had reactions to it. While the reactions can be nothing serious, to death (which is with any medication), the most common one seemed to be the feeling of "itchy" skin / skin crawling. He would not allow me to have it (mind you I have no sensitivity to it as far as I am aware of), due to I was going to be labor and the last thing they wanted to worry about was my being itchy / having a reaction, and not being able to counter it. However they gave me demerol with my first one, which didn't really do anything for the pain, but allowed me to sleep between contractions. Toward the end I was having three contractions on top of each other, 30 seconds apart (way crazy). I felt every bit of it, however, those 30 seconds I had between them felt like I slept 6 hours. So I was well rested (at least it felt like it) when it came time to push. However, they will not give you anymore approx. 1 hour before the baby is born due to the fact they do not want to "narc" the baby. If the baby is gorked out of it's head upon delivery they cannot get a true APGAR score on it. Hence, why they do not give it approx. 1 hour before they are projecting the baby to be born. I had rapid deliveries.....and the babies were fine. In fact, I felt great afterwards (little tired, not bad though) and asked if they could either hurry up and stitch me so I could eat.....or bring me something to eat while they were stitching me. I was starving.   Hope this is able to help. Good luck.

I didn't take any kind of pain meds before the epi. We got to the hospital, asked for it in triage and the anasthesioligist was waiting for me in my room when I got up to labor and delivery. So all I can recommend is the epidural. It was heaven from a needle though. Sorry I'm not more help.

I had IV pain meds and I don't remember a lot of the delivery. They didn't work that well and my baby was really groggy and hard to breast feed. I will never do IV pain meds again. I also had an inta thecal and that didn't work either. I am hoping that an epidural will work this time around.   Good luck with everything

When I was in labor with my son, the first thing they gave me was Stadol. It didn't take the pain away at all. It made me very dizzy and I was freaking out cuz I felt like the room was spinning. Then I threw up from feeling dizzy. After that my doc broke my water and I got my epi. That was heaven!!!

IV meds were the only thing that worked for me. Most of them will make you tired but I think its better to be asleep then in pain lol. You will be awake for the actual delivery of course and the more you get it the less powerful it is. First dose will probably have you sleeping like a baby in less then 5 min lol I put off getting it as long as possible not because I wanted the pain but because I still wanted it to work good further on. I didn't really feel any pain when I was pushing or anything after that due to increased endorphins I think its called otherwise known as natural pain killers lol. Labor isnt a walk in the park but if you can't get the epidural it is still do able without having to suck it up and deal with the pain the entire time. You do have to wait a while in between doses which is another reason I waited so that it worked better and longer when I REALLY needed it to. Good luck. I have another due in Nov and will definatly do IV meds as long as possible before trying the epi again.
