long car trips w/baby who doesn't like the carseat

posted 9th Sep '07
Soooo.... I will be making my move to NC this weekend (hopefully, unless something else happens....) and Justin absolutely HATES the carseat! Does anyone have any tips or ideas on how I can make the 8 hour drive without stopping every 20 minutes to take him out of the carseat and get him calmed down again enough to ride? I don't want to let him cry it out either....

Try leaving at bedtime if at all possible, I know its a pain driving at night but he will sleep if you do

I thought about that, but my mom said he won't sleep in the car like he does at home... I might just try it though. If we have to stop and get a hotel then we will... thanks!

My son hates car rides too. I sit in the back with him while my husband drives and I entertain him by having some toys and waving them in front of him or when all else fails I stick my pinkie in his mouth as a pacifire. I've only let him CIO once in the car and that's when there was nowhere to pull over for miles when we were on a mountin road with no shoulder.

But driving while he's asleep is a great plan. I've done that before and it worked great!

I feel your pain, my baby doesn't much like car rides either. I bought one of those mirrors with lights and music, it comes with a remote control so I can activate it while driving that helps for a little while. Usually I sit in the back and have some else drive but if I am going solo I am in for a trip with an earful!   Maybe bring a soothing CD or something with a lot of bass I heard the drone of bass can put a baby to sleep. Good luck.

My daughter only tolerates short car rides....if she starts screaming though I just turn up the music in the car a little louder than she is screaming so she can hear it...then turn the volume down a little as she gets quiet. She really likes it and it makes her fall asleep. She just hates everything quiet when she sleeps. Also, she usually does better at higher speeds...then as soon as we stop or slow way down she wakes up and cries....so try to stay at a constant speed and not stop too much or at all. Just an idea...good luck!
