Bottle/Formula Feeding

posted 8th Sep
Ask all of your formula and/or bottle feeding questions here!

What's the best formula?

How many ounces should my [insert age here] be eating?

What bottles do you like best?

Ask it all

Okay, I have a little chart that I wanted to post that really helped me out in the beginning. I know one of the problems I had with bottlefeeding was I didn't know how much to give Max! He would be happy to suck on a bottle all day if I let him!

This is, of course, averages, and changes with each baby. I used it just to get an idea of where I was going with feedings. Max is a month old and eats about 8 times a day, but only 3-4 oz each feeding (but then he has a slight case of reflux and does better with smaller, more frequent feedings).

Thought it might help out those mamas that have no idea what they are doing, like me when I started!

I don't...but, my friend has this "baby bargains" book and it basically says that all formula's have to follow the same guidelines, so they are pretty much created equal...so why not go generic and save!? I know alot of people who do that...but, I'm still alittle leary...so we still use Enfamil Lipil w/iron!

And thank you SOOZEW for posting the chart! After 3 kids I still worry about under and over feeding! I know they are averages and all kids are different...But, looking at the chart I feel much better about what Lauren's eating...That's another way breastfeeding is easier...I never had to worry about over feeding!

We did until we figured out that Max has reflux and now we use Enfamil AR. But I liked the Parent's Choice. It's so cheap!

Simple one, maybe, but here goes...

My wife has breastfed our 7-week-old so far w/no problems. We are about to start using the breast-pump so we have a little more flexibilty if we are out of the house, but question is this:

Let's say we're at the grocery store & he's crying cause he's hungry. OK, we have bottled milk in pack to keep it chilled (fresh). How do we warm it? Have to have hot water, or does that even warm it sufficiently to feed on the fly?

It looks like all of the non-plug-in, non-car-charger bottle warmers are a pain to use or don't work well anyway... help?

You dont have to warm it, all of my sons bottles are room temp. If you are out and you are using bottled breast milk, you dont have to keep it chilled, it stays fresh for 10 hours in room temp.

Even if it is slightly chilled, there really is no reason to warm it. The majority of babies like their food body/room temp, but there is no reason not to give him cold milk. He may balk at it, if that is the case, run the bottle under hot water in a nearby restroom for a minute or so to take the chill off.

This is what I went by with my first baby and I am doing this again with my second. I multiply the current weight by 2.5 ounces. That is the amount I try to get her to eat each day. Right now, she is at 11 lbs. and she is eating around 26 oz per day give or take an ounce or two. Hope this helps!
