Quoting Love Wedge +2:" My son had his 4 month visit today. The doctor was concerned with the spitting up he's doing so she told ... [snip!] ... nursing. What would giving him formula, on top of nursing a full amount, do? Other than be way too much for his tummy?"That is what amazes me about Dr's. The stuff they say can make such little sense. I have no clue what your Dr thinks that is going to do to help with reflux. it seems to me it would make it more likely. Topping up after a feed is a terrible idea unless you want to reduce your supply. The only thing it can do is delay the next feed.

She knows more about his case because she was in the NICU with us.

Quoting justanothamotha:" Is he gaining okay?"November 21 he was 9 lbs 2 oz. This morning he was 10 lbs 4 oz.
Quoting Love Wedge +2:" Do you guys switch breasts multiple times per feedings, sometimes? This current feeding we've switched 4 times in 20 minutes "No, I did single side feedings (AKA block feedings). I wouldn't recommend switching past a month old because it can lead to a foremilk/hindmilk issue. Also - staying on one breast gives your baby more hindmilk which is thicker & richer in fats & calories. It can help space out feeds & with weight gain. If you aren't getting green or foamy poops though or fussy behavior, it's likely harmless. It can cause a reaction similar to lactose intolerance if there is too much foremilk, because the milk then leaves the tummy too fast & when it gets to the intestine there is too much undigested sugars & the intestines react to that. I only used both breasts at each feed (if baby wanted it) for about a month or so. My 2nd one did single side feeds from day one as he only nursed about 5-7 mins & was done.

I was burping him but was told by a multitude of people that he doesn't need to burp because he's not swallowing air. I posted maybe a week ago about how he'd scream blue murder for sometimes 20 minutes until a burp came out. Switching sides would most times help. He'd nurse another 5 - 10 minutes and be done.
