It's likely she's not getting enough hindmilk. Try block feeding. Feed on the same side for a couple feedings and the switch. This is to be sure baby gets the more fatty hind milk.

I have a question about pumping. My daughter is a month old and EBF. She is having green poops and was told to block feed which seems to be helping but I also want to pump so I have a supply here at home for when DH and I have date nights. Is it ok to pump the other breast that she is not nursing off of or will this increase my supply? I have a large milk supply to begin with and often find myself having to express some milk before her feeding so she can latch properly. Also, would it be ok to pump before she nurses instead of expressing it so that I can freeze it, or would it mostly be useless as it would be foremilk and defeat the purpose of block feeding? I am confused! TIA

Can somebody please help me? I have been having trouble with my LO getting enough milk so I have been topping him up with formula. I do not want to be doing this and even got a prescription to help. How can I increase my supply? Also, I was told nothing comes out after 15 minutes (he was on there for an hour at a time) but should I take him off after 15 minutes? I REALLY want to be EBF. Thank you!

The longer and more often you put him on the boob the more milk you will produce! So just let him stay on there for as long as he wants. Your boobs are never really "empty" anyways so he'll always be getting something. Also, fenugreek capsules help increase supply. Oatmeal is supposed to help too.

In addition to the other things the other mama said...Ive heard beer helps...Dark beer. & also pumping. The more you pump (even if you dont get anything out) will help increase supply

Hello Ladies,
I am due with my 3rd child in November. I have not been able to breastfeed for a very long time with either of my children. Here are my 'problems' that I have had in the past.

I have one nipple that is ALMOST flat but there is still something there lol. So at the hospital I am always offered a nipple shield by the nursery nurses when i am having a hard time with latching. This time around I am refusing the nipple shield completely because I dont know how to let go of it later on.

With my first I was able to breastfeed with a nipple shield successfully for 4 months. I was pumping and nursing and had a very good milk supply. I nursed in the football position right from the start (thats how they showed me in the hospital because I had a c-section)

with my 2nd, i thought we were doing great the first 2 weeks until he had a doctors appointment and they told me he wasnt gaining weight. so at first i tried nursing him more but something went wrong there and i got a breast infection. and after that I couldnt get a correct latch the entire time i breastfed him. and i quit at 3 months. (i go a breast infection on the same side 2 times after that)
my nipples hurt the entire time i nursed him and they were bleeding and scabbing and just wouldnt heal no matter what i did....

If there is someone that can help me, please offer me some advice. is there something i need to do to prep my breasts for breastfeeding ???

To pull out the nipple you could do a few pumps on a manual breastpump before latching baby. As for the not gaining weight, it's normal for them to lose some of their birth weight, and not gain it back until around 2 weeks. Was he still at his birth weight at 2 weeks, or was it that he was still not back at his BW?

He was at his birth weight at his 2 week checkup. and they told me to start supplementing after every feeding with formula....... BIG MISTAKE.
Thats probably why i got my first breast infection!

Being at his birth weight at 2 weeks is Awesome! I'm so sorry you got smurffy advice, it makes me so ANGRY! Arg! Yeah, if you didn't pump while she got a bottle then it confuses your body a ton (supplementing full stop does that anyway).
My daughter was 6.14 at birth, went down to 6.3, and was back up to 6.12 by day 12. That was on the 'bad' end of weight loss, almost 10%. I was never told to supplement though, ever. She's a healthy breastfed 18m old now!

Wow I feel so stupid right for not doing my own research on this back then...
My son is now 17 months old. My goal was to breastfeed him for a year, unfortunately I didnt even get half way..
At least i know better now and hopefully will not make the same mistakes again..

Someone told me your window for correct latching and breastfeeding is if you breastfeed within the first hour of birth, is this true?

The first hour is ideal, if you have a vaginal birth you want to have your chest exposed (more blood goes to your chest than your brain immediately after birth, to keep baby warm) to get skin to skin - don't even let them touch him for a little bit unless he's unwell. Type into YouTube 'newborn breast crawl', if you can do that then that's great, but don't worry that if you miss that hour then you can't breastfeed, because that's not true.
Please don't feel stupid, we live in a society where we are taught to trust doctors and hold them as authority figures, but I have found their training on Breastfeeding is seriously lacking. The best thing to remember is that every day counts - every drop of milk your babies got was beneficial, and you obviously tried really hard, and for that you should be proud!

Thank you so much! Do you think I would be allowed to do this in the hospital withing the first hour??
