Doctor put Kenny on Zantac today

posted 31st Aug '07
For the past 3 or 4 days now Kenny has started to eat less, has become very fussy, and cries for more than hunger. So I took him to the doctor's today because it was time for something other than rice cereal. I am hoping the Zantac works soon. Today has been really rough on him. He has been screaming, crying in pain and hunger. We have been trying to get him to take as much as he can to keep him hydrated and get his nutrients. Poor kid is very hungry, wants to eat, but is in a lot of pain because of the reflux. I feel so bad for him, there isn't anything more we can do for him but wait for the zantac to start working. I really hope it works...and works soon.
And my MIL...driving me up a wall. She thinks he is not eating because he doesn't like the taste of the rice cereal. HELLO LADY, HE HAS REFLUX!!!! She also thinks he is crying out of constipation, not the burning. He poops 3 x's/day...no back up there. They live with us, and I can't wait till they leave for vacation...I need a week off from her.
Thanks for listening to my lil rant.

my little girl just started on zantac last week. we've seen some changes in her like she seem more happy during the day and not so much screaming and crying which is good but she still only sleeps like 6 hours a night( not all together) and only a one hour nap during the day. the doctor told me this zantac would fix all these problems. Im going to wait a little longer cause other moms are telling me too and they also say when it does work, it works very well. I definatley know what you are going through if you ever need to talk and i wish you all the luck with your little one and his new medicine.

Thanks!! The doctor said it can take anywhere from 2-3 days to 2-3 weeks to work. I can't see my boogs in pain like that for that long. As for his sleeping, I hope he gets to sleep peacefully soon. I don't mind that much about my sleep getting effected, I worry more about him. I know eventually we all will get a good nights sleep. It would just be nice to see him sound asleep again without all the grunting and groaning he does.
The good news is that the reflux has not effected his growing. He is now 11 1/2 lbs, not bad for my lil preemie. I just started him on size 2 diapers Weds and the doctor told me today that he will be in size 3 very soon. The size 2's are kinda on the small side for him   What a chunk!!

Have you tried Nutramagen (sp?) by Enfamil is a hypoallergic formula. Its crazy expensive but my SIL used it with my niece, who's ped. wouldn't give the Zantac, and it worked wonders.

It started with his spitting up like crazy, especially at night feedings, my son couldn't keep anything down. He strains we eating, coughs, and hiccups a lot. He has not slept comfortably or ate comfortably for the past 2 weeks now. We tried rice cereal in his bottles, worked for like a week and a half. On Monday, he started to eat less and get very fussy with eating. After his second burp, he started to scream and refusing to eat. Then the arching of the back started on Tuesday. It got progressively worse for the next 2 days, till finally we got into the pediatrician. He seems to be responding well to the Zantac so far.

Kenny is currently on 0.6 mL twice daily. So far, after two doses, he seems to be responding well.

sophia was doing the same thing, she was such a good eater from birth and not too many problems then 2 weeks ago all of the sudden she started only eating like 1 1/2 oz and then she would fling her head back and arch her back and scream..it was horrible, thank god i had a doc appt that week and when i described it to the doc she said it sounded like "silent reflux" sice she wasnt spitting up or vomiting...she gets them same .6ml twice a day and i put gas drops in her bottle

Kenny also gets Mylicon 4 x's/day. So far since starting the Zantac, he hasn't had any issues with gas. I thinks its just good timing though.

I sent this as a PM to KFox but after reading everyone post I thought I would share with everyone. My son is now 11 weeks old and has been battling reflux since his was 3 days old. We started him on Zantac 1ml 2x a day, he slept with his head elevated at least 30 degrees, we held him up right for at least 45 mins after meals and switched through 5 different formulas. After about 2 weeks for the Zantac his reflux came back with a vengance. My son would scream during his feedings, arch his back, only eat like an ounce to an ounce and a half every 2 hours, he had horrible gas pains, he would spit up what seemed like his entire feeding, he would sleep at the most 45 mins before he would begin whinning because of the pain. We went to the Ped. every week for the first 2 months for his life. I been awake more in the past 11 weeks then I have been in my whole likfe. There would be days at a time where I wouldnt sleep or if I did it was a short nap while he napped. My mom would come up on the weekends and her and I would take shifts so I could get some sleep. Being a mom and watching your child in pain and not being able to do anything was hard, but I am also a nurse and that mademe feel even more like a failure. All I could do was rock him and pat his butt and tell him it would stop hurting soon. I had a HORRIBLE case of the baby blues so he and I would just cry for hours. Finally, we switched his medication to Prevacid solutabs. He started with 1/2 a tab (7.5mg) in the AM and we started similac sensative RS. It took a little over 2 weeks for the medicine to kick in but when it did I had a new baby!!!!!!! He is now on 1 tab 15mg once a day and on the same formula. He is a happy baby now, smiling all the time. No more crying with his bottles, and he sleeps in 4-6 hour stretches. He still spits up, but nothing like before and no where near the fequency. I have bunches and bunches of info on reflux if anyone has any questions. I am always on gaga if anyone would like to chat. There is also a web site for parents with reflux babies http://www.reflux.org/reflux/webdoc01.nsf/(vwWebPage)/Home.htm?OpenDocument. They have a forum where you can post questions and get GREAT advice. I Hope this helps everyone out and like I said feel free to PM anytime!!
